If you are new to veganism or maybe just curious about it, there are a few things you might want to know – things that will help you make the important decision to go vegan.
Firstly, you must know that veganism isn’t a diet. It is a way of thinking and acting in all parts of life possible. Secondly, don’t be so hard on yourself, especially in the beginning. You will make mistakes, eat things you think are vegan but really aren’t, you might not be able to let go of meat and dairy over night and that’s okay. I made the switch in a second one morning and some people went vegetarian for a while first and then slowly eased themselves into veganism. Both ways are okay, because all people are different. I was able to quit just like that, but that’s a completely other story, but I still sometimes missed meat and I still smell grilled meat and think “that smells nice”. Because it does. And that is also okay.
Remember that every time you choose vegetables over meat or non dairy products over milk and cheese, you are choosing NOT to be a part of and contribute to the suffering of countless of animals. Even if that is just one day a week or even one meal a week, it is still better than what you did before.
Also, be prepared that people will ask questions and you don’t have to answer them if you don’t want to or know the answer or are good at arguing. You can simply say I am doing this because I want to. I believe that animals have the same right to live without being used as humans does. That’s all I have to say about this, so let’s that about something else now. Just because you choose to be vegan doesn’t mean that you HAVE to answer every stupid question meat eaters ask you. If you do, kudos to you, that’s awesome.
It’s okay to be angry. At the world and all the people who live in it and slowly destroys it. At all the people who eat dead animals and think nothing of it. It’s okay to be angry. However, have some humility. Remember that just because you made the connection, educated yourself and understand, not everyone else has the same knowledge or mindset as you. There are lots of stuff that you don’t know and there are still ways that you contribute to oppression and suffering. Have a smartphone? Great, in slaved children with no pay and no rights made that for you. Do you buy your clothes in normal stores? The women and children sewing that for you probably didn’t love their lives. The harsh truth is this: if you want to live and function in the society we have, you will contribute to oppression and suffering. You were privileged to be born in a country that let’s you go to school, have a computer, drive a car, get a job, travel to other countries by plane or train etc etc. For us to live like that, other people must suffer. That’s the truth. And it sucks, but its still the truth.
So yes it is awesome that youre now vegan. Honestly, it’s the right thing to do. But don’t get all high and mighty thinking that you’re better than others. Show patience, humility, respect and love towards those you encounter. Even people who will challenge you or say things like “animals are made for eating”. Know that you were once the same. You have also been contributing to this animal slaughter and torture for years and years before.
Despite the difficulties you might face, veganism is extremely rewarding. You will feel good in your body because you’re finally eating things that’s good for you, you will feel good in your soul when you think about all the animals you will save as well as the water. No one is perfect, but you are pretty darn good.
So go vegan. That’s all I have to say.
