Being the only vegan

So, being the only vegan amongst friends and families is slowly but surely getting harder. When friends say they could never be vegan because they love meat I don’t have the energy to start listing everything that happens to the cows/pigs/hens etc and how they’re treated. I just don’t want to create an awkward or uncomfortable vibe when everyone is having a great time. I had a conversation with my sister yesterday who is starting to realize that going vegan is the right thing to do but is still hesitant. She could perhaps go vegan if she is allowed to eat some cheese, yoghurt and ice cream every now and then on special occasions. I guess it is still better than nothing but personally I don’t think it is worth it.

I want to make my parents vegan. I want them to understand the cruelty and pain and death they’re putting in their mouths. I want them to understand. But how does one do that exactly? Mom is semi-vegetarian so convincing her will probably be easier than convincing my father. Although he is a compassionate and kind man he is also stubborn and don’t like change. I have a plan though, which i showing them this video: Farm to fridge. It is less than 15 minutes long and extremely informative on both meat, eggs and dairy. If you haven’t watched it – you should. After showing my parents that video, I want to show it to the rest of my family. My boyfriend, my uncles, my aunts and my cousins. Maybe my grandma, but she is so old that I figure she gets a pass. However, I am afraid that I show them this horrible video, where they will see all the cruelty and horror that is happening and still eat meat. Because, how can a person do that if he knows what is going on?

Sorry for this messy post, it’s just good to discuss things once in a while. If you are the only vegan in your family, please let me know and tell me how you feel!

Much love// Bella

I know how you feel about wanting everyone around you to realise what you have realised! It’s so hard, but like you said, it can make things so awkward and uncomfortable, not to mention it is exhausting getting into the facts every time someone says something ignorant like your friend did! I just don’t even bother anymore. 😦 Unfortunately we can’t make anyone do anything. I have lived this way for 4 years now and what I have noticed is that your loved ones will take things on board in their own time and make small changes here and there, but they don’t want to change. Like most meat eaters they are in denial and it’s just “easier” for them to stay that way! Not sure where you live, but could you introduce your sister to some vegan ice cream, cheese, etc? There’s a lot around. Maybe she would be more willing if you showed her some of those options? 🙂 All the best!

She is currently living in Poland and the vegan options aren’t great. However when she visits home (Sweden) during summer and other vacations she has tried both vegan cheese, ice cream etc etc. Unfortunately she isn’t ready to give up dairy quite yet. I did convince her and her boyfriend to at least stop eating meat and they’re now vegetarians – I just hope that it’s a step towards veganism and not the end station, if that makes sense.
