I want to address a topic that might seem boring but is actually very important: Protein intake.
I know a lot of vegan youtubers claim that in order to feel good, lose weight and be healthy one should stop eating proteins and focus solemnly on carbs.
That is not true.
As most of us know, all proteins are built out of 20 different amino acids. Our body produces most of the amino acids but a few – called essential amino acids – has to derive from the food we eat. All of the essential amino acids can easily be found in meat but on a vegan or vegetarian diet it can get tricky. Humans are in need of protein given that at least 10 000 different proteins make us what we are.
If our bodies aren’t getting enough protein (and all the amino acids needed) it can lead to a number of different things – none of which is desirable. Protein deficiency is the cause of a disease called “Kwashiorkor”, often found in very poor countries and the symtoms are not to be taken lightly: (the list is taken from MedlinePlus).
I could have chosen far more disturbing pictures, but I figured that it’s better if you google it yourself.
- Changes in skin pigment
- Decreased muscle mass
- Failure to gain weight and grow
- Hair changes (change in color or texture)
- Increased and more severe infections due to damaged immune system
- Large belly that sticks out (protrudes)
- Lethargy or apathy
- Loss of muscle mass
- Rash (dermatitis)
- Shock (late stage)
- Swelling (edema)
That doesn’t sound so fun, does it? It is still healthier to have a diet free from red meat, but that doesn’t mean veganism or vegetarianism is 100 % perfect.
That is all I have to say for now, so just think about this the next time you plan your meal.
